In this blog post, I will explain the steps required to write an effective resume that gets result. What is exactly is a resume? Your resume is personal marketing tool that highlights your skills and credentials to prospective employers.
The purpose of your resume is to get your foot in the door for the interview that will eventually lead to a job offer. A resume is a written statement of your educational background, professional experience, skills, and qualities. It is a crucial instrument in the job search process because it enables potential employers to comprehend your qualifications and how you may benefit their business. It is estimated that hiring managers spend thirty to forty five seconds reviewing your resume. Like a good super bowl ad, a resume can stand out with thirty to forty five seconds of retention time. Do not think your resume needs to sacrifice quality because of this.
Overview of Writing a Resume
First, the prospective applicant needs to write a general resume that lists his or her history of jobs. Usually, a standard resume needs to be one page, and should not be lengthly or multiple pages.
The one page should be divided into two sections header and body. Please note that the one page resume should be comprehensive and brief. Please do not include hobbies, personality tests, or any part time or casual jobs that are not applicable.
I would avoid putting summer or casual jobs on your resume if you applying to a professional salaried position.
If these part time jobs are applicable, then I would include them. Please list an objective statement and the code or reference number of the position. If a reference number is not included, please do not include with the objective statement.
An Example of objective statement would be:
I am applying for the Software Engineer position, ref 012345, at Indeed that was posted on StamfordCTjobs.com, August, 2020. I have the qualifications and skills to qualify for this position.
The objective statement should be targeted to the position, or a general objective should be used, such as
I am looking for software engineering position that will utilize my skills and talents.
What should be included in the header of resume?
For the header section, the objective statement should be underneath the contact section.
In the header section of the resume, I would include your personal contact information, such as cell phone number, e-mail, skype number, web address, and physical address.
Please include your cell phone number, and please include a professional voice message with your answering machine, not simply a blank voice message, or answering machine without your contact information. I often call sales people who do not have a voice message attached to their answering machine. It is important to create a personal connection from the start.
In this digital age, I would suggest using professional usernames for e-mails, domains, and contact usernames. Please do not use a nickname as an e-mail alias.
I would include a skype username that is professional, such as john.smith. Please include your first name, and last name. This is the same for your e-mail address. Please do not include some random nickname and a bunch of numbers. Please register your last name as .com domain if possible. Please include your web address, such as your first name, and last name as a .com.
I would like to note that some human resources would suggest that your physical address should be omitted, but I think if your home is close to the job location, then the hiring manager would be in favor of hiring. This is one variable in the hiring process, whether or not you can easily commute to the job location. I think your home address should be included because listing your address may help you land the job.
